The Walls Come Crashing Down

One of my favorite songs has lyrics that go as follows:

Words like violence
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world
Painful to me
Pierce right through me

Truer words have not been spoken. I find it amazing how words, with no arms and legs of their own, can hit you like a punch in the stomach. Words batter and bruise and leave lasting scars. Those
wielding words of violence have no idea the power they posses. Yet, all it takes are a few careless words to erase the wall of safety that was erected to keep out the demons of the past.

I wish I could speak as though I've never hurled
razored words at someone. I wish I could say that I've never spoken words for the mere pleasure of inflicting pain. All I can say is that I try every day to not become what I have escaped from. Yet, despite erecting walls to keep out the sorrow, it only takes a few simple words, spoken in a fit of anger, to blast a hole in the facade and have the past come flooding in.
